Remember Scholastic's Book Clubs that we all got once a month in grade school? They have a software club now, and are pushing Inspiration 7.6PE (for $20 more than the regular version) as the only thing standing between your child and a cardboard box under a bridge.

I would like to introduce The Boy to organized thought patterns (plus it would be wildly fascinating to really see how his mind works, instead of being divebombed all the time).

I just hate to fall for marketing hype, if something more solid exists.

I'm also not a fan of "kid friendly" versions of things -- kids will absorb whatever they can, and are only limited by what you will permit them to absorb. I would prefer to have him working in open source and shareware just so he is familiar and comfortable with the environment -- at school it's Windows, Windows, Windows . . .
